Nearly 25,000 homes in south-east Queensland were left lacking electricity on the start of the week after intense storm systems passed over the state, generating wind gusts reaching over 100 km/h.

Large Hailstones and Widespread Damage

Locals observed large ice chunks measuring up to seven centimeters in certain regions. Meteorological experts verified that multiple regions across the state had been impacted by large hailstones.

Emergency crews were working to restore energy supply throughout the affected regions, with approximately seventy teams working to manage the widespread outages.

Southern State's Weather Woes

At the same time, approximately one thousand energy customers in Victoria also experienced electricity disruptions after the capital city saw its heaviest rainfall in a year and a half.

State Emergency Services responded to over five hundred emergency reports across the area, primarily for property damage but also for downed trees and inundation.

  • Wyndham - 179 calls for assistance

At one point on Sunday, over twenty-eight thousand electricity consumers in the state were experiencing outages.

Climate Outlook

Damp conditions were predicted to continue along significant areas of the state's eastern regions this next several days as a weather pattern continued to pull in damp air against the coastal areas.

Tuesday was forecast to be the wettest day, with persistent thunderstorm potential expected across different parts of both regions.

Safety Concern

Health officials cautioned that there was an higher risk of weather-related respiratory issues across the state's northern country region, especially given the current weather patterns.
