The megacity Awakens to Hazardous Haze After Celebrations
On Tuesday morning citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered exposed to severely hazardous air that fell into the "critical" category.
Extremely High Air Quality Levels
Various sections of the capital recorded an air quality index above 500, which represents 10x the healthy threshold set by the global health authority.
Certain monitoring stations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1800, equating to fifteen to twenty times exceeding healthy standards.
Fireworks Restrictions and New Developments
Beginning in 2020, officials had enforced a complete ban on the sale and use of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the hazardous pollution that blankets the capital as the cold season begins.
Nevertheless recently, the current regional government appealed to the supreme court to seek a relaxation of the prohibition.
They proposed allowing "green crackers" – which have been doubted by conservation groups as being only about 30% lower impact – as a balance between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Judicial Ruling and Enforcement
Despite concerns of medical and ecological advocates, the court agreed to the proposal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during limited periods throughout the Diwali.
During the celebrations, there was widespread flouting of the time restrictions across the capital, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly version.
Many recording stations throughout the capital showed air quality reaching highest levels around midnight to some of the worst readings seen during Diwali in at least recent memory.
Cross-Border Implications
The widespread use of pyrotechnics during the festival also initiated a dispute with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming worsening atmospheric conditions in Lahore on contaminants traveling from India following the festivities.
Persistent Pollution Crisis
Extremely elevated concentrations of air contamination in the capital have persisted as a serious issue for fifteen-plus years, with the condition continuing to worsen.
During Diwali, the amount of dangerous particulate matter in the environment has been observed to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the peak records ever measured in China's capital, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated city.
Multiple Pollution Factors
The situation in the city is resulting from a convergence of various sources including transportation pollution, construction debris, building projects, waste incineration and smoke from agricultural fires in adjacent states of farming communities.
Throughout these areas, farmers illegally ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, generating hazardous pollution that becomes contained over the capital as cooler air arrives.
Medical and Economic Toll
Both financial and medical impact on the nearly 33 million inhabitants residing in the Delhi area is enormous, according to various research.
The contaminated air causes high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can potentially cause malignancies.
The pollution is projected to be responsible for approximately 10k early fatalities per year in the capital.
